Reading Therapy Dogs at Jefferson!

We are so excited to welcome the wonderful Reading Therapy Dogs and handlers here to Jefferson School to listen to the students read!  Each year the children look forward to the visits.  The students have increased confidence in their reading skills and are continuing to improve!  The children also develop an appreciation for the dogs and have learned how to interact with them in a supportive and positive situation.  The dogs are great reading companions for our students!  Thank you so much for your participation!

Fall into Reading: Fall Themed Books

Fall is a perfect time to get back into a routine at home with practice and encouraging reading outside of school. Since children are back into a routine for school, it can make for an easier transition to incorporate reading at home. There are many ways that this can be done: setup a reading area at home, model reading, or read with your children before bed. You can even incorporate a fall theme with book choices to get started on an interesting and timely note.
For emerging readers, a great fall themed book is The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger. This story is told from the perspective of a leaf that is holding on during the transition from fall into winter. It can be a great book to discuss the idea of change as well as friendship with your children and how sometimes it is okay to let go and embrace the challenges ahead. As a connecting art project, you could have your child finger paint a yellow leaf and then add it to a brown tree that you build with construction paper. You could then add other leaf friends to the tree as well.
